The gears are possessed! When I check them on the bike stand - they change just fine. Take it out on a ride, and 2 or 3 miles from home - skip a gear, grind grind grind. Silly thing. I have to go out and adjust them again today. One things for sure, I'm going to slowly become a good bike mechanic. : )
